At age 54, after 35 years of playing racquetball, mountain hiking and high impact aerobics, my body is rebelling. I’ve suffered three sprained ankles and injuries to most of my other joints. In the past three months I’ve been diagnosed with a torn rotator cuff and a torn meniscus.
Would I do it all again?
Nope. I would’ve stopped some of these sports and exercises 10-15 years ago and moved into activities that aren’t so hard on the body.
The truth is, we have to be gentle with our bodies. That’s true even when you’re young. But it’s especially true as you grow older. I’m lucky I don’t have to have surgery and can still bicycle and swim. I can also do most of my regular strength training. I responded well to physical therapy. My focus now, however, is a little less aerobic acitivty and more flexibility and strength training.
If you’ve been injured, call us. At Metro Doctors Group, many of our doctors and therapists want to help you avoid surgery. They’ll take the time to explain your injuries in detail, to work with you to get back on your feet, and to help construct an exercise routine that’s good for your body.
Be well,
Mary
